Dear colleague,

“The Japanese Museum of Anesthesiology” of the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists (JSA) introduces the history of anesthesia and the works of anesthesiologists. The job of anesthesiologists is to protect patients’ lives and relieve pain during surgery. In recent years, their works are expanding into various pain management and care for critically ill patients.
Medical activities of human have long history. However, the modern history of anesthesiology in Japan started after World War II. Japanese anesthesiology has continued to develop with support from advancements in anesthetic drugs such as in haled anesthetics and intravenous anesthetic drugs, equipment such as anesthesia machines and ventilators, and monitoring devices such as electrocardiograms and pulse oximeters. “The Japanese Museum of Anesthesiology” of JSA is the only institution that exhibits and shares unique materials and documents related to the development of the modern history of anesthesiology in Japan.
